Otter Removal & Control in Indiana

River otters were reintroduced to Indiana in the 1990s and have successfully reestablished across much of the state. They are highly beneficial predators that are generally shy around humans. However, otters can cause problems for pond owners and fish farmers by consuming fish stocks rapidly — a family group can significantly deplete a pond in a short time. Otters are protected in Indiana and require a depredation permit from the Indiana DNR before control measures can be taken. Licensed wildlife control operators work within DNR permit requirements and can advise on deterrents and protective measures for fish ponds and aquaculture operations.
